regularly scheduled public lectures per month featuring authors, writers,
historians and artists. Programs and Exhibitions August 2008 Major Events______________________________________________________ Opening Reception for Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line II and Hidden Heritage: Western Art Treasures from an Atlanta Collection August 16, 2008, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Members are invited to view two new art exhibitions and enjoy refreshments in the Café. At 7:00 p.m. Museum Director Seth Hopkins will moderate a panel discussion with gallery owners from across the West providing their insights on the Western art market.
August 23, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Join us as
we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Booth Museum.
Members will enjoy a free lunch. Children can participate in art
activities offered throughout the building, and families can enjoy
continuous entertainment in the Booth Theatre. We will also look forward
to the opening of the Museum’s new wing by offering hardhat tours of the
expansion.
Special Exhibitions_______________________________________________________ Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line II August 16, 2008 - November 30, 2008 - Special Exhibition Gallery This is the second installment of the Booth Museum’s signature, triennial exhibition featuring Western art from Southern collections. Building on the success of the first exhibition, in this series, the Museum will showcase seldom-seen Western American art from private and public art collections throughout the South. Artwork by the greatest Western artists of the 19th and 20th centuries will be featured. Hidden Heritage: Western Art Treasures from an Atlanta Collection Through September 14, 2008 - Theatre Lobby Gallery An Atlanta couple who shared a love for the West and Western art spent over twenty years building an excellent collection of Western images, including many excellent examples from members of the Cowboy Artists of America. This exhibition will survey the best of the collection, including powerful oil paintings, highly detailed pencil drawings and dramatic bronze sculptures. Sculptural Works by Ed Archie Noisecat July 29, 2008 - September 21, 2008 - Borderlands Gallery Born and raised in British Columbia, Ed Noisecat was surrounded by the stories and art forms of the Native Americans of the Northwest Pacific Coast. Although formally trained in New York, and utilizing contemporary methods and materials in his sculpture, Ed continues to evoke the carving traditions of his ancestors. Recently he has won awards for large public art commissions, yet he continues to carve smaller works as well. Regular
Programming____________________________________________________ August 6 - 12:15 pm in the Booth Theatre Gain an understanding of the cultural symbolism found in works of art by Native Americans from the Pacific Northwest and other cultures. This program compliments the exhibit The Coastal Carving Tradition of Ed Noisecat, currently on display in the Borderlands Gallery. Western Movie Day August 10 1:00 Four Faces West 3:00 The Far Country Evening Entertainment - An Evening With Mark TwainAugust 21- 7:00 pm in the Booth Theatre Actor, entertainer and Booth Museum’s Director of Special Projects, Jim Dunham, will appear as Mark Twain in this humorous and informative presentation chronicling the life and times of this American treasure. Watch spellbound as Mark Twain comes to life on the Booth Theatre stage. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for not-yet-members.
Booth Art Academy - Adult Classes ____________________________________________________ Introduction to Oil Painting August 2, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Instructor: Amanda Carder The best way to learn to paint is by painting. Develop your own unique painting style by exploring supplies, subject matter, and techniques, but mostly by hands-on experience. Each student will receive individual attention and a constructive critique. Taught by Amanda Carter, this class is just $100 for Booth Museum members and $120 non-members.
