Children's Saturday Programs

Children's Saturday is an educational program for children ages 4 to 12 and their parents, and is usually offered the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Programs relate to the Museum's permanent and traveling collection and focus on teaching children about the American West through art, literature, entertainment, teaching and hands-on activities. 
A nominal fee for materials is charged.

Children’s Saturday  - Jingle all the Way 
Celebrate the holiday season by visiting Cowboy Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Museum and getting your picture taken.  Children can also make a holiday ornament to take home.

January 10, 10:00 – 12 noon Children’s Saturday - Bulldogging - Rodeo Star Bill Pickett Explore the exhibit, The Black West: Buffalo Soldiers, Black Cowboys & Untold Stories, and learn about Rodeo and how Bill Pickett invented bulldogging, an event that made him a star. Make your own movie poster featuring Bill Pickett.

February 14, 10:00 – 12 noon Children’s Saturday - Buffalo Soldiers – Don’t Head West Without Them
Explore the history of the 9th and 10th U. S. Cavalry, and discover why the Native Americans called them Buffalo Soldiers. Learn about the vital part they played during the Indian Wars and in escorting settlers headed West.

March 14 –15, 6th Annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering
Children can enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor activities including decorating small acoustic guitars and banjos made from cardboard, creating a “Howling Coyote” masterpiece, and watching the finals of the Georgia Youth Poetry Contest.

April 11, 10:00 – 12 noon Children’s Saturday – Of Creatures Great & SmallAnimals of the American West
Discover the wide variety of animals, large and small, that inhabit the American West and the role many of them played in the history of the West. Use pastels to draw and color the majestic Bald Eagle, the symbol of our country.

June 13, 10:00 – 12 noon Children’s Saturday – Is it Real? – Texture in Art
Explore the Booth’s Galleries and discover how artists create the illusion of texture in their artwork. Use your fingertips and imagination to guess the different textures in a “texture bag”. Create art projects featuring different textures.
