JANUARY 2012

Special Exhibitions

Stan Natchez: Indian without Reservation
Through January 8 – Temporary Exhibition Gallery
Stan Natchez creates art that juxtaposes the icons of both ancient and modern American culture, often incorporating familiar items such as pow-wow beads, dollar bills and newspapers.  Inspired by Pop artists Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, his work explodes in vivid colors and provocative visual statements.

Eighth Annual Kids Cowboy Up!
Through January 8 – Borderlands Gallery
Throughout the year, staff members from Booth Western Art Museum work with members of the Cartersville Boys & Girls Club and the Hands of Christ after school program to create artwork in a variety of media. This annual exhibition gathers the best works of art created during the preceding year. The young artists range from elementary school to high school students.

The Iconic West of R. Tom Gilleon
January 28 through May 27 – Temporary Exhibition Gallery
Tom Gilleon brings a unique perspective to the iconic subjects of the West, and is best known for his translucent teepees.  The more than 30 paintings in this exhibition expose viewers to the full range of his subjects, including grain elevators, Indians, horses and landscapes.  Also included are several nine panel grid paintings reminiscent of Andy Warhol.

Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line III
Through February 12 – Special Exhibition Gallery
This is the third offering in the Booth’s signature triennial exhibition series, featuring seldom seen great works of art from public and private Southern collections.   Included are more than 90 paintings and sculpture in a range of media and styles covering over 150 years of art history.

Regular Programming

Art for Lunch: Artist Kay WalkingStick
January 4, 12:15 p.m. Booth Ballroom
Kay WalkingStick is one of the best known Native American artists in the world.  During this session, she will describe how she began as a landscape painter but in recent years has created many diptychs (two panel paintings) that juxtapose landscapes with figures.  A great example of her work is on view in Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line III

Evening Lecture: Artist Kevin McCarthy
January 19, 7:00 p.m. Booth Theatre
Growing up the son of famed Western painter Frank McCarthy, Kevin was surrounded by art.  While he chose to sculpt rather than paint, Kevin shares his father’s interest in Native American culture.  Join him for a discussion of how he turns his research into dramatic bronze figures, including the one in Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line III.
