The Booth holds two
regularly scheduled public lectures per month featuring authors, writers,
historians and artists. Art for Lunch is on the first
Wednesday of every month from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm. Evening
lectures are held on the third Thursday evening each month at 7:00
pm. All lectures are in the Booth Theatre; admission is free for
members and volunteers and included with Museum admission for
not-yet-members. Ticketed events may have additional fees.

Annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering
March 6 - 9
Join us for a four-day celebration of the West including featured artists
Paul and Chris Calle; featured entertainer Red Steagall; children’s
activities; banjo, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle contests; chuck wagon and
Dutch oven cooking contests; poetry writing workshop; cowboy church, and
much more.

Time and Place: Landscapes by Ken McClesky
Through April 6, 2008 – Borderlands Gallery
Ken McClesky spent his formative years in the urban environs of Atlanta,
studying illustration at Atlanta College of Art. However, his discovery of
the open spaces and landmarks of the American West inspired him to focus
on the beauty and power of these sites in his landscape paintings. The
artwork in this exhibition anticipates the coming of Spring and the
renewal of life.
Figures from the Ground Up: Profiles by Sculptor Julia Knight
Through April 6, 2008 – Borderlands Gallery
While not a Western artist, her work reflects the Western American spirit
of celebrating the diversity of the human and animal personalities that
surround us. This exhibit will feature a number of her bronze portrait
busts, including her depiction of President Jimmy Carter, commissioned by
the Booth Western Art Museum.
21st Century Regionalists: Art of the New West
Through April 13, 2008 - Special Exhibition Galley
Showcasing the art of more 14 Western artists who in a distinctively
regional style, this is the Booth’s first invitational exhibition. While
these artists have much in common with the Regionalist movement of the
1930’s, they are also quite contemporary, employing modernist techniques
and often dealing with poignant issues. Participating artists include:
Woody Gwyn, Elaine Holien, Tricia Higgins Hurt, Trish Booth, Howard Post,
Doug Smith, Jim Vogel, Josh Eliot, Gary Ernest Smith, Louisa McElwain, Ed
Sandoval, Rebecca Tobey, Joshua Tobey and Mark Yale Harris.
Like
Father, Like Son: The Western Art of Paul and Chris Calle
Through March 30, 2008- Theatre Lobby Gallery
This exhibition includes more than 20 works of art by famed Western artist
Paul Calle and his talented son Chris. Paul’s depictions of mountain men
in both oil and pencil are highly prized by collectors. His depictions of
explorers of new frontiers extend from high elevations to space travel.
Chris has followed in his father’s footsteps by drawing mountain men, but
has also made a name for himself as a designer of postage stamps with more
than 200 stamps in circulation. In addition to work by each artist,
collaborative projects will also be on display. The Calles will serve as
the Featured Artists for the 5th Annual Southeastern Cowboy
Gathering, March 6 – 9, and will provide the keynote lecture on the
evening of March 6.

Music

Doc Stovall and the Tumbleweed Cowboy Band will perform in the Booth
Atrium from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Meet artists Paul and Chris Calle, featured
artists for the Annual Cowboy Gathering in the Theatre Lobby Gallery from
6:00 to 7:00 pm and then join them for a presentation on their artwork in
the Booth Theatre a 7:00. Meet artist Ken McLesley in the
Borderlands Gallery and view his exhibition Time and Place: Landscapes
by Ken McClesky from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served
adjacent to the Borderlands Gallery.
Children’s Saturday- Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering
March 8 -9
Enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for families and
children of all ages. Listen to the Georgia Youth Poetry Contest
Semi-Finals on Saturday March 8 in the Booth Theatre.
Participate in art activities inside
the Museum. Music, cowboy poetry, chuck wagon and Dutch oven cooking
contests and a fiddle contest round out this unique weekend.
You’ll be one of the “Best Dressed
Cowboys” in town when you make and decorate your very own cowboy vest. Let
your imagination run wild as you create a Western landscape using crayons,
markers, pastels and die cuts. Explore the history and mystery of the
“Mountain Man” through stories and hands-on exploration of objects. Chuck
Wagon Cooking on the hill Saturday and Dutch oven cooking on Sunday.
Evening Lecture - Georgia O'Keeffe: American Icon
March 20, 7:00 pm
Recognized as one of the worlds greatest women artists, Georgia
O'Keeffe is an icon of American modernism. To trace her rise to fame,
the High Museum's Coordinator of Interpretation, Jenna Madison, will
discuss the early stages of her career and the development of her unique
style leading up to her unforgettable paintings of the American West.
She will also preview the High's current exhibition - Georgia O'Keeffe
and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle.
