Thursday, March 6th 

10:00 am – 5:00 pm:  Museum Open 

5:00 – 7:00 pm: Meet the Artists Reception and Western Music.  Meet artists Paul and Chris Calle and view their work in the Theatre Lobby Gallery while Doc Stovall and the Tumbleweed Cowboy Band perform Western music in the Atrium.

 7:00 pm: Featured Artists Presentation in the Booth Theatre.  Paul and Chris Calle, two of the top artists who depict the experience of the famed Mountain Men, will discuss their careers and show examples of their work.  Following the presentation, both artists will be available to sign copies of the official Gathering poster in the Museum Store.

 

 Friday, March 7th

10:00 am – 6:30 pm:  Museum Open

 9:00 am - 1:45 pm: School Programs.  Several entertainers in town for the Gathering will perform at local schools. Call Doc Stovall at 770-387-1265 for details and availability.

 7:00 pm: End of the Trail Supper and Concert among the chuck wagons gathered on the Museum grounds 
(In case of inclement weather this event will be held in the Booth Theatre.)

Featuring Andy Hedges, Kent Rollins, and Jim Hawkins
Friday, March 7th, 7:00 pm

Amidst the Chuck Wagons on the Museum Grounds

Designed to simulate the end of a long cattle drive, this event features cowboy poets and singers from around the state.  These talented performers will take turns reciting or singing their favorite Western material amidst the chuck wagons gathered for the weekend.  Featured participants will include poets Jerry Warren, Andy Hedges, Kent Rollins and Jim Hawkins.

Andy Hedges

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Andy Hedges represents a new generation of cowboy poets and singer/songwriters. Building on the tradition of cowboy poetry and music, Hedges incorporates his own unique influences to make his music fresh for audiences of all ages. Hedges has traveled the West performing at the National Cowboy Gathering in Elko, NV; the National Cowboy Symposium; and various cowboy gatherings, schools, theaters, and concerts. 

 

Kent Rollins

Owner and operator of the Red River Chuckwagon, Kent Rollins travels the country cooking and telling stories. Rollins has appeared on the Family Channel, PBS, QVC, and the Food Network. He has been nominated three times for Best Story Teller by the Academy of Western Artists and was voted Cowboy Humorist in 2002. When he’s not performing or cooking, Rollins and his family operate the Red River Ranch, a cow/calf operation along the Red River in Oklahoma.

 

 

Jim Hawkins
Jim Hawkins grew up in North Carolina on a 1,000 acre farm started by his great grandfather which is about 100 years too late and about 1,800 miles east from he believes he should have. Splitting his time between the family farm in North Carolina and parts of Wyoming and Montana, Hawking sends his days raising and training Foundation bred working cow horses and Blue Heelers – and writing and performing cowboy poetry. Hawkins began writing about 12 years ago. Believing that cowboy poetry comes alive when presented to a live audience, Hawkins enjoys performing for people whenever the opportunity comes along.

Tickets (includes a barbecue dinner with all the fixings): $15 for Booth members, $20 for not-yet-members.  Tickets for both the performance and the dinner can be purchased at the Booth Museum or by calling 770-387-1300.

 Saturday, March 8th  

10:00 am – 6:30 pm:  Museum Open

 8:00 am –Noon: Southeastern Chuck Wagon Cook-off on the north side of the Museum.  Teams of cooks will prepare beans, meat, potatoes, bread and desserts just as they did on the cattle drives of the 1800s.  Ticket holders will be served at 12:00 Noon.  Tickets are $12 and should be purchased in advance at the Museum.  Winners will be announced at 2:00 pm. 

 10:00 am – 4:30 pm: Open Fiddle, Mandolin, Guitar, and Banjo Contests at the Grand Theatre. Top musicians from around the Southeast compete for cash prizes and bragging rights; mandolin begins at 10:00 am, banjo at 11:00 am, guitar (flat-picking) at noon, junior fiddle division (under 18) at 1:00 pm, and open fiddle division at 2:30 pm.  Participation is limited; contestants should register in advance by calling Doc Stovall at 770-387-1265.  (Regular Museum admission will be charged to the public for this event; $3 for Booth members, and $1 for children 12 and under.)

12:30 – Youth Cowboy Poetry Semi-Finals (Grades 7-8)

1:30 – Open Mic Music and Poetry

2:30 – Youth Cowboy Poetry Semi-Finals (Grade 9-12)

3:30 – Jim Dunham’s Cowboy Show
 

 10:30 am - Noon: Adult Cowboy Poetry Workshop in the Booth Training Room led by Jerry Warren.

 11:00 am – 4:00 pm: Children’s Saturday Activities, hands-on activities where children can make their own Western art masterpieces offered at stations throughout the Museum. You’ll be one of the “Best Dressed Cowboys” in town when you make and decorate your very own cowboy vest. Let your imagination run wild as you create a Western landscape using crayons, markers, pastels and die cuts. Explore the history and mystery of the “Mountain Man” through stories and hands-on exploration of objects.

Red Steagall is a famed Western singer, songwriter, poet, and guitarist. A native of Texas, Steagall has entertained audiences all around the world and has been called “a singing scholar of the old West” by James Earl Jones, and “the best of the best” by Rex Allen. His musical talents are featured on his new CD entitled “Here We Go Again” which features collaborations with Toby Keith and Reba McEntire. Steagall has also had several motion pictures rolls including “Benji the Hunted,” “Dark Before Dawn,” and “Abilene.” He was named 2006 Poet Laureat for the state of Texas making him the first “cowboy” poet laureate for the state.    

Saturday Night Concert Tickets: $25 for adults, $20 for Booth members and $10 for students.  Tickets can be purchased at the Booth Museum, Grand Theatre box office or by calling 770-387-1300.  A CD signing will follow the performance in the Encore Room adjacent to the Theatre.


 
Sunday, March 9th

11:00 am – 5:00 pm:  Museum Open

 11:00 am: Cowboy Church in the Booth Theatre – A non-denominational church service with a Western flair.

 Noon – 4:00 pm: Dutch Oven Cooking Contest on the north side of the Museum grounds.  Top cooks will compete for prizes and bragging rights in three categories: bread, main dish and dessert.  Teams will turn food into the judges beginning at 1:00 pm and serve samples to the public.  Winners will be announced at 4:00 p.m. 

 Noon – 4:00 pm: Children’s Activities, hands-on activities where children can make their own Western art masterpieces offered at stations throughout the Museum.
