Extended Classroom Programs

Discover the fascinating world of art and history in downtown Cartersville, Georgia at the Booth Western Art Museum. Choose from eight available programs and take your students on a field trip they will always remember. 

Student tour programs are designed to meet state and national curriculum standards in visual art, social studies and language arts, and encourage students to engage in critical and creative thinking. The Museum’s extensive collection of art by artists of the American West provides students with unique insights into the culture, geography and history of the West. In addition, the museum features a gallery of art about the Civil War and a Presidential gallery containing an original signed letter by each United States President.


School Tours require 15 students.

Student Costs:

$5.00 for students
$4.00 for Bartow, Cherokee and Forsyth county students
$6.00 for The Union Dissolved program
$8.00 for parents/chaperones
Teachers and bus drivers are admitted free.

Trained Docents lead your students through interactive activities in the Museum.

Don’t Miss This Special Temporary Exhibit!

The Black West: Buffalo Soldiers, Black Cowboys & Untold Stories
This program is appropriate for Grades 4-5  
(90 minutes)
Celebrate Black History Month with a visit to the Booth Museum. Discover the story of a people whose contribution to our nation is just now being told. Through paintings and sculptures by some of America’s finest African American artists, students will gain an understanding of the vital role played by African Americans in the exploration and settlement of the American West. Perhaps artist Bobb Vann said it best when stating one of his goals in painting was to “…leave a truer image than was left before, of our Black people.”

Wrangler
This program is appropriate for Grades 2- 5
   (90 minutes)

Saddle up and join us on the Wrangler Tour to explore the life and times of the American cowboy. Students will travel through the Museum’s collection in search of the cowboy of fact and fiction. Using the Wrangler Round-Up gallery search and Cattle Drive Game, students will learn about the day-to-day life of the cowboy – his clothes, equipment and everyday jobs around the ranch and on cattle drives. Students will also take an imaginary journey on the Museum’s original Butterfield Stagecoach.

Ta Tanka
This program is appropriate for Grades 2- 5
  (90 minutes)

The Ta Tanka program focuses on the Native Americans who inhabited the Western Plains and followed the seasonal movements of the buffalo herds. Using the Museum’s artwork, gallery games, hands-on activities and role-playing, students will discover the myths and truths about the Plains Indians.

Presidents and Heroes
This program is appropriate for Grades 2 – 12.
   (90 minutes)

This program provides students with a rare glimpse into the lives of the Presidents through the portraits and signed Presidential letters in the Booth’s collection. Through age appropriate gallery searches and hand-on activities students discover a variety of notable facts about the Chief Executives from George Washington to George W. Bush.

Art Explorers
This program is suitable for art students in Grades 3-12.
  (90 minutes)

Explore the galleries of the Booth Museum. Delight in Cowboys, Native Americans, Mountain Men and other legends of the Old West. Participate in gallery games and other hands-on activities designed to emphasize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.

Cowboys, Indians and Art
This program is appropriate for Kindergarten and First Grade and includes a visit to Sagebrush Ranch. (90 minutes)

Designed for young art lovers, this hands-on program introduces children to basic art concepts such as line, shape and color while enhancing their observation skills through developmentally appropriate activities designed around the Museum’s collection.

Dogies, Ponies and More
These programs are appropriate for Pre-K students and include a visit to Sagebrush Ranch. (60 minutes)

Choose from four themes: Cowboys & Cattle Drives, Animals of the American West, Indians & Tipis and the Art of Line, Shape and Color.

 

The Union Dissolved – American Presidents and the Civil War
This program is specifically matched to Georgia Performance Standards for Grade 5. (2 hours)
From the Founding Fathers to Fort Sumter to Appomattox Court House, explore the Presidents, underlying causes, major battles and camp life of soldiers who were players in the tragedy that was the American Civil War. Through guided activities in the Presidential and Civil War galleries, exploration of Civil War camp life and a hands-on art activity, students become eyewitnesses to the unfolding drama that threatened to tear the nation apart.
This program takes place at the Booth Western Art Museum and is jointly sponsored by the Bartow History Center.
A complete Teacher’s Guide with integrated activities is available when this program is booked.

Discovery Box Program
Life on a Cattle Trail:
Invite a member of the Museum’s education staff into your classroom to present a unique lesson about life on a cattle trail. Designed to augment classroom lessons about the American West, this program introduces students to the role of the American cowboy, and the names and locations of the early cattle trails, while featuring artwork from the Museum’s collection. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1.    All scheduled programs require a $25.00 deposit to guarantee each reserved program. This will apply toward the program cost and is not refundable unless the program is cancelled or rescheduled 2 weeks or more in advance.
 

2.    If the number of students in your group changes, please contact Central Scheduling at 770-606-5699 and let us know as soon as possible.

3.    All programs include a short stop in the gift shop.
This time will provide the students not only a restroom break,
but also an opportunity to buy a souvenir or browse.

 

4.    Please follow the adult to student ratio recommendation:

1 adult / 5 students for Pre-K through 5th grade tours.

1 adult /10 students for middle school and high school tours.
 

All successful programs involve active participation of adults

in helping to maintain the student’s discipline and focus.
